On Sunday 8th October, we held a special Birthday tea, at the former WSPU headquarters, in honour of suffragette Emily Davison, who is the Emily of #Emilymatters and the focus of To Freedom’s Cause.
.
.
Emily Davison was born in 1872 on 11th October, a date which since 2012 she has shared with the UN’s International Day of the Girl, so it’s definitely an important date in the feminist calendar!
Thank you to everyone who joined us this year, either in person or via social media.

This year we were live on both Periscope and Facebook Live. The celebrations included:
- #TeawithEmily – where Emily Davison spoke direct to future generations, in a short extract from To Freedom’s Cause.
- A look at the upcoming #Vote100 celebrations in 2018
- And a return of a perennial favourite, the suffragette board game, Pank-a-Squith.
We have come a long way since Emily Davison and her sister suffragettes fought for us, future generations, to have the right to vote, to be equal.
Like Emily Davison herself, we believe in social justice and equality worldwide, not just the right to vote. See our #Emilymatters page to find out more about what we do.

Social media is a key part of the campaign. The suffragettes embraced the modern media of their age, so had they been around today, would have been all over the Twittersphere, etc.
In addition to our online events, we are also developing #Emilymatters outreach and creative projects that include interactive performances, talks, speeches and my Emily Davison play To Freedom’s Cause, which remains at the heart of the #Emilymatters campaign.
.
Sunday’s celebrations looked towards next year’s important suffrage anniversary, (100 years since the Representation of the People Act, which gave all men and some women the right to vote) and noted that it would be another 10 years before equal voting rights were achieved.
Thank you again to everyone who joined us this year. We would love you to join us as we develop a legacy project for 2018 and beyond.
