#Emilymatters is a social media campaign, inspired by suffragette Emily Davison, that champions gender equality and has a specific focus on voting matters. See our #Emilymatters page to find out more about what we do.

I’ll get straight to the point because there’s no time to lose and I hope you can help:
.
What is it exactly?
  • A short clip made for specifically for social media
  • It’s a very simple idea – ridiculous even, just like the tampon tax
  • A classic parody with a timely reaction to the Autumn Statement
  • It draws on the suffragette’s brilliant use of humour to win the argument
Just a silly idea?
  • Not if you consider exactly what the Autumn Statement announcement about this particular tax actually signifies
  • A clever sleight of hand that is “blood for blood” as Sophie Walker, leader of the Women’s Equality Party put it in her piece for the Huff Post
  • It’s deadly serious

A fantastic team of creatives is already in place and ready to go. We’re 99% of the way there.
What do you need?
  • A backdrop/location that looks grand, old style (Victorian/Edwardian looking would be ideal). In London.
  • Preferably for the best part of a day, but we can make it work with less.
  • And possibly some extra lighting.
We’ll sort the rest and we are a very well behaved professional team with added creative sparkle. Get in touch and I’d be happy to discuss the details further.
.
When do you need this?
  • Now! Well, not quite. But almost.
  • Everyone involved has work commitments most weekdays, so it needs to happen this weekend (5 or 6 December).

Don’t they have to go to Europe to sort the tax?
Very true, but given that the successful put mothers on marriage certificates campaign is still waiting for the agreed changes to be made, it’s pretty clear that the powers that be need sustained encouragement to get things done. ‘Deeds Not Words‘.

.
But the government is giving all the money raised to women’s refuges and related organisations? And isn’t domestic violence really a niche issue? Women are 51% of the population, so definitely not a minority/niche group and such a critical issue that affects the whole community, not just women, should be properly funded by general taxation – I’ll refer you back to Sophie Walker’s excellent article.

A bit more about us:
#Emilymatters began with a special performance of my Emily Davison play To Freedom’s Cause at the House of Commons, one of only a handful of plays to have ever been performed there, so if you want proof that I can deliver this is it. Creativity, the play and the suffragette legacy remain key elements in the campaign.
.
The suffragettes used humour and wit to highlight the injustices of their day. Sadly, it’s all too clear that from education to the workplace, Parliament and most areas of life, when it comes to gender equality the UK must do better.
.
What’s in it for you?
If you or someone you know can help us get this done, you’ll be part of a a project that reaches back to Emily Davison and her sister suffragettes/ists by putting the creative into campaigning.
